The function and future of SDIN
Launched in 2001, the Sustainable Development Issues Network was created as an alliance of mutual support among issue-based and major group caucuses. The Network aimed to improve cross-caucus communication and cooperation, both in finding and supporting common aims as well as identifying and resolving differences. In 2002 the network was joined by the three "facilitating" groups to help build capacity and effectiveness of the Network and the NGO community. What are your thoughts and ideas about SDIN's function and future? How can the Network further improve on these aims?

The function and future of CSD
After Rio, the UN Commission on Sustainable Development was created "to examine the progress in the implementation of Agenda 21 at the national, regional and international levels." [Agenda 21: 38.11] Other functions of CSD were to: (1) "receive and analyse relevant input from competent NGOs" [38.13d], (2) enhance the dialogue with NGOs and the independent sector [38.13e], and allow "NGOs...committed to the implementation of Agenda 21 to have relevant information available to them." [38.14] How well has the CSD been doing its job? How can it become a more effective vehicle in promoting sustainability?

Sustainability and the MDGs
With the review of the Millennium Development Goals coming up this September, many wonder whether sustainability will play a leading or diminishing role in the UN agenda. Will the new emphasis on and concept of "security" expand, within the framework of sustainable development, to include social and ecological priorities or will the overarching goals of sustainable development take a backseat to a more restricted view? What are you views on this important topic?

A New Paradigm: NGO Policy Statement
The "NGO Policy Statement for CSD-15: A New Paradigm," produced by CURES, has been circulating for some weeks now. What parts of this statement are most important to you? Why? Can this serve as a basis for NGO advocacy at CSD-15? In what ways does the Statement support or contest key points in the Secretary General's papers or statements by other Major Groups?

Defining "sustainable energy"
One of the biggest controversies at CSD-15 is in defining "sustainable" energy. Some believe nuclear power should be included, along with "cleaner" fossil-fuel technologies, ethanol, and the idea that growing energy consumption and demand requires an "open" approach to increase supply as well as access. How do you define "sustainable energy?"

Shifting energy subsidies
For decades governments, NGOs and others have agreed that "destructive" or "perverse" subsidies should be phased out or shifted to sustainable energy forms such as solar energy and other renewables. Yet the political obstacles continue to block these necessary changes. How can CSD-15 provide a more insightful analysis and proposal for overcoming those political obstacles and ending subsidies to the big oil companies and nuclear power companies? We can expect everyone to agree to change, but what should CSD-15 delegates agree to do? What's your analysis and recomendations?

Nuclear power
Some believe that nuclear power should be included in the sustainable energy mix. Is it a "clean" energy? What is your opinion? What is your analysis of the current situation with nuclear power in the world today? Should it be phased out or made safer and more efficient?

Clean coal
Coal is one of the major sources of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Coal mining also has environmental and social impacts, such as with mountaintop removal and other issues. Some believe that coal mining and fuel production and consumption should be made cleaner through new technologies and management approaches. What is your opinion? How well did the review session of CSD-14 address the topic of "clean coal?" What policies should be promoted by CSD-15?

Biofuels
Some describe biofuels as one of the answers to global warmings. Others describe them as agrofuels, more in the interest of big agribusiness companies than the planet or the poor. What is your position?
